The first meeting of the Houston Woman Business Book Club was held in January 2009 as an experiment. Mine!
I had long enjoyed reading “business” books to keep up with the latest trends. I always learned a lot from the books I read, but I didn’t have other like-minded friends with whom to discuss them. I always wished I did.
Then, one day I thought, “Surely, there are other women out there (like me) who would enjoy being part of a book club focused on business.”
So, I decided to schedule a meeting and recruit some members — specifically, readers of Houston Woman Magazine. Selfishness aside, I wanted the book club to be yet another way for me to further the publication’s mission of informing, inspiring and connecting women. The experiment worked. More than 50 women came to that first meeting, and many have continued to return month after month. Not only are they enjoying a great breakfast and learning and sharing a lot, they are networking (making friends) in a wonderful new way. I couldn’t be happier!
The group meets at the HESS Club, 5430 Westheimer, on the third Wednesdays of the month (January-May, July and September-December). We start at 7 a.m. and are out the door at 8:30 sharp. There is no fee to join, and attendees do not have to be subscribers to this magazine. Men have visited the group from time to time, and they are welcome too.
