Hitting Hunger Out of the Park

The first annual Seniors vs. Hunger Charity Softball Tournament takes place tomorrow at Memorial Park on Fields 1, 2 and 3. All proceeds benefit the Houston Food Bank.

According to Bill Wilson, tournament chair and manager of the Christian Brothers Senior Soft Ball Team, the first annual event will be a bracketed softball tournament consisting of 12 senior level teams with players that are over 50 years of age. Additional teams will be comprised of Houston area celebrities, as well as a team made of up clients from the Open Door Mission.

Wilson, the visionary for this project, commented, “Being active in and outside of the Houston community is a key value of mine. This tournament is the perfect way to enjoy a competitive, athletic event while giving back to the community, especially to a charity so near to my heart,"

The Houston Food Bank, a nonprofit organization founded in 1982, accepts food donations, which are distributed to local charities. In 2007, more than 38,000,000 pounds of food was distributed – feeding more than 498,000 Houstonians.

“We want to hit hunger out of the park,” said Wilson. “The Houston community can come together to make a difference. The Houston Food Bank is responsible for feeding so many impoverished Houstonians; we only want to do our part. They stand for the same principles of integrity, compassion and community that we uphold on our league and tournament softball teams.”

The tournament is scheduled begins at 8 a.m. One bag of groceries and/or a $15 donation per person will grant entry to the tournament, and refreshments will be available throughout the day’s activities. The public event is being sponsored by Christian Brothers Automotive, Boaz Exports and The Texas Half Century Club.
