EVENT Periwinkle Foundation celebrating 30th anniversary

The Periwinkle Foundation will kick-off its anniversary year with an evening of Hops and Hamburgers at Saint Arnold Brewery on Thursday, January 24 from 6 to 9 p.m. The Friends of Periwinkle invites new supporters and volunteers to mix, mingle and learn about the joy and enthusiasm the Foundation provides through its range of camps and programs.Membership dues for the Friends of Periwinkle start at $25 and include admission to the event.

The Periwinkle Foundation works to change the lives of children, young adults and families who are challenged by cancer and other life-threatening illnesses and cared for at Texas Children’s Hospital. Since its creation in 1983 by Dr. Paul Gerson, The Periwinkle Foundation has hosted more than 6,000 campers, sponsored more than 60 theatrical performances and showcased more than 10,000 works of children’s art, which in turn inspired 20,000 Postcards From The Road from across the United States.

The Periwinkle Foundation began as a week-long summer camp for pediatric cancer patients and has since expanded its services to address the needs of children, teens and families throughout the entire treatment process. These activities include Camp Periwinkle, Camp Periwinkle Day, Camp YOLO, Family Camp, Long Term Programs and the Arts and Creative Writing Program.

“Over the past 30 years, we’ve seen numerous campers return as counselors, and the families we’ve helped continue to support us as well,” said Joe Birkofer, president of The Periwinkle Foundation Board. “It’s a true testament to the impact The Periwinkle Foundation has on a person, and we look forward to continuing to positively change lives by adding programming and partnerships to our range of services.”

The 30th Anniversary also begins a new chapter at The Periwinkle Foundation’s new offices located in West University at 3400 Bissonnet, Suite 185.
