Retired Lt. Gen. Brent Scowcroft, former national security adviser to Presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush, will discuss international relations and national security on April 4 at 6 p.m. at Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy. Former U.S. Secretary of State James A. Baker III, the honorary chair of the Baker Institute, will offer opening remarks.

Scowcroft, who also served as military assistant to President Richard Nixon, is president of The Scowcroft Group, where he provides clients with strategic advice and assistance in dealing in the international arena.

In recent years Scowcroft has served as a co-chair for both the Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future and the National Academies of Science's Committee on Science, Security and Prosperity. He also served as the chairman of the Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board and was a member of the United Nations Secretary-General's High-Level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change.

In 1991, Bush presented Scowcroft with the Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. Scowcroft received the insignia of an Honorary Knight of the British Empire from Queen Elizabeth in 1993.
