HAWC to open new call center

The Houston Area Women’s Center will unveil its newly updated 24-Hour Call Center at 1010 Waugh Drive on Wednesday, March 21 at 9 a.m. The new call center includes an updated phone system, new computers, headsets, software and other equipment.

The system upgrades were made possible through a $100,000 charitable grant from the Humana Communities Benefit Program in Houston. The Women’s Center is the seventh Houston nonprofit to receive the award.

The jewel of the new upgraded system is its capability to track every incoming call through an electronic information screen, allowing advocates to distinguish between information-only calls and emergency/distress calls for greater efficacy in helping serve the area’s women, children, and men.

The Houston Area Women’s Center helps individuals affected by domestic and sexual violence by providing shelter, counseling and advocacy. Last year, HAWC provided services to 60,000 people and reached an additional 30,000 through its educational services.
