Bowling for Blankets

Recent cold snaps have been a welcomed relief after the scorching summer, but with the oncoming winter months many Montgomery County residents will feel the chill far greater than one might imagine. This is why Carolyn Gerken, President of A-Plus Services, a personal care assistance organization located in The Woodlands, is holding her Third Annual Blanket Drive for seniors living in Montgomery County.

“We are desperately trying to collect 400 blankets by Dec 10 for our aging community to survive the winter months,” Gerken said. “We only have 30 blankets to date and need much more support. We are also asking for sock and slippers for both men and women”

To spur on the blanket drive, A-Plus Services is hosting a “Bowling for Blankets” blanket drive at AMF Woodlands Lanes located in Spring on Saturday, Nov 19 from 3 to 5 p.m. Gerken is asking participants to bring a new twin fleece blanket. The items will be delivered to area seniors for the holiday season and may be the only gift they receive during the holidays.

“For each new blanket donated at the ‘Bowling for Blankets’ we will give a coupon for one free game of bowling,” Gerken said. “We are also looking for bowling teams to participate in the event which would be a great corporate bonding opportunity for a great cause.”

Gerken also has several drop-off locations whereby area residents can drop off new or used blankets. New blankets will be donated to Interfaith of The Woodlands and used blankets will be donated to Friends of Texas Wildlife.

“Interfaith is thrilled with the involvement, dedication and commitment of our community that ensures everyone will have a wonderful Holiday Season, shared Dr. Ann Snyder, president & CEO, Interfaith of The Woodlands & Interfaith Community Clinic. “A special thanks to Carolyn for encouraging others to give a blanket for one of our Seniors. These wonderful initiatives are what truly build a more loving and caring community.”

Donations can also be made at various blanket drop-off locales, namely: Arnold Chiropractic, Bandier Realty Partners, Donna’s Printing, HighPoint Financial, Kwik Kopy Printing, One 30 Fitness, The Villager newspaper, and The Young Leaders Academy.
