Market Square Park to open

Starting Saturday, Aug. 28, Market Square Park, Houston's newest green space, will be the place to be downtown.

Market Square Park is located in the heart of Houston’s Historic District and designed to play a critical role in creating a sense of community for downtown residents, businesses and visitors. Park goers will be treated to live entertainment throughout the year, beginning with the official grand opening on Saturday, Aug. 28. All scheduled events are free and open to the public.

Family-friendly activities are planned throughout the afternoon — from 2 to 9 p.m. Visitors will be able to explore the area with historical tours, be the first to take their four-legged furry friends to the new dog runs, enjoy coffee and refreshments from the new Niko Niko’s Greek Cafe and more.

Dog activities such as pet portraits, pet education, adoptions and giveaways take place from 2 to 6 p.m. All are sponsored by the Houston Dog Park Association.

Official celebration begins at 6 p.m., with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and words from Mayor Annise Parker, Councilmember James Rodriquez, Downtown Redevelopment Authority President Jamie Mize and Downtown District executive Director Bob Eury.

Live performances by local singer/songwriter Andrew Karnavas and The John Evans Band follow at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. respectively.

Visitors to the park are encouraged to stay connected and up-to-date with all activities at Market Square Park via Facebook.
