LWV elects new president

The League of Women Voters of the United States celebrated its 90th anniversary at its 49th Biennial National Convention this week in Atlanta. The four-day gathering discussed important public policy issues, as well as celebrated the League's accomplishments in healthcare reform and judicial independence.

Today, Elisabeth MacNamara of DeKalb County, Georgia was elected the 18th president of the League, unanimously by more than 600 delegates.

MacNamera has been a League member since 1983, served as president of her local chapter from 2001-2006, was elected an LWVUS national board director in 2006 and held the position of first vice president until 2010.

Delegates at the convention set the LWVUS program agenda for the next two years, which included voting to study the federal role in public education and the privatization of government functions.

Key speakers this morning included Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius and U.S. Representative John Lewis.
