Cancer Survivors Day

Hundreds of volunteers, supporters and cancer survivors gathered at The Westin Galleria Hotel yesterday, May 27, for CanCare of Houston's 16th Annual National Cancer Survivors Day Luncheon.

Can Care is a a non-profit organization dedicated to serving as a support system for those affected by cancer. CanCare has helped spread its message of hope and support for 20 years by partnering with more than 130 hospitals, corporations and congregations of varying faiths throughout the greater Houston area.

"CanCare stands for the idea that you'll never have to walk alone," said Nancy Tucker, president and CEO of CanCare.

The luncheon honored some of the people who make that idea possible: Cindy and George "Buz" Jochetz, who were part of the founding board of CanCare and have remained active participants; Anne Shaw Turnage, CanCare founder and colon cancer survivor; and the Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, which helped CanCare establish its original hospital visitation program.

The luncheon also included appearances by Mayor Annise Parker and Keynote Speaker Barbara Padilla, Hodgkin's survivor and finalist on "America's Got Talent."

"Illness ended up being my biggest blessing in life," said Padilla who opened her speech by singing "You'll Never Walk Alone."

Many agreed with Padilla and said that although they wouldn't want to have cancer again, they are happy they had it because it led them to have a great appreciation for life.

"Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can't put it out," said The Reverend Dr. Dave Peterson, senior pastor of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, who concluded the luncheon with a Candles of Hope Ceremony. The ceremony was held in memory of those who have lost their lives to cancer and honoring those who have struggled with cancer.
